Since both iPad Air and Nexus 9 have 4:3 screen ratio, the screen size of Nexus 9 is slightly smaller than iPad Air in length and width, as the diagonal size showed.
However, when Nexus 9 or iPad Air is compared with Samsung's Galaxy Tab series, we should be aware of the different screen ratio. Actually, the length of Nexus 9 screen is same with the Galaxy TabS 8.4, not with the 10.5 model. It means if you're using tablet mainly for watching videos, Galaxy TabS 8.4 has same visible screen size with Nexus 9 if you play 16:9 or any wide-screen videos. Nexus 9 is 0.9" wider than TabS 8.4, but both are in the same length.

In this manner, TabS 8.4 can be also an alternative for Nexus 9 for those who are mainly watching wide-screen videos on their tablets.
